Description
Taino (c. 1000-1500 CE) Wooden Zemi made of Lignum Vitae. This wood is related to the creosote tree and is bug and decay resistant. Therefore the Greater Antilles is fortunate to have rare wooden ceremonial goods that remain well preserved. Zemis are usually made of stone and wooden examples are extremely rare. The format is unusual with two handle-like extensions. The face likely represents Yucahu, the supreme god of fertility and planting. One "handle" has slight separation. From the Alexander Rood Collection 1945-1990. Purchased by Alfredo Carrada 1990. Currently Carrada Collection. Size: 13.5'' x 5.5'' x 5.5'' (34 x 14 x 14 cm). Please Note: There Are No Hidden or Confidential Reserves in this Auction; All Acceptable Bidding Commences at the Online Start Price.
