Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to early 3rd century BCE. A lovely wheel-thrown terracotta kantharos with a ringed base, wide rolling walls with a constricted shoulder, a flared rim, a shallow interior, and a pair of arching applied handles. Both the interior and exterior were painted with a coating of red slip, though age and environmental conditions have rendered the exterior into a pale-orange hue. Size: 6.5" W x 3.75" H (16.5 cm x 9.5 cm).
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Uwe Dams collection, Upper Palatinate, Germany, 1975 to 2000

Condition
Vessel body repaired from several large pieces with wax-like stabilization substance within interior. One arm and portion of shoulder repaired. Age-commensurate surface wear, minor nicks to rim, handles, and base, and some fading and discoloration to pigmentation. Nice encrustations, earthen deposits, and mineral deposits throughout.
