Item Details
Description
Grouping includes:

Carte-de-visite (CDV) of William S. Friesner of the 58th Ohio (no imprint on verso) and an October 25, 1888 pamphlet in which Williams S. Friesner is listed as a candidate to join the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS).

Both items were both originally part of a grouping owned by William S. Friesner himself. Friesner is perhaps best remembered for serving as a guard of prisoners-of-war aboard the ill-fated Sultana on April 27, 1865. He later testified that he was the last man aboard the vessel before she sank. Writing about the experience later in life, he said “life and the love of life was strong within me. I thought of my young wife, my mother, my friends, and all those things that make life worth living — they, too, with their sorrow and tears and all that is the bitterness of death. But through the mercy of God I thought of my duty to preserve the life He had given me. A duty to Him, to my country and friends to make all effort in my power that I at least might die as I thought a man ought to die!"
