Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Schouten Islands, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden food pounder surmounted by a nude female ancestor that bears broad hips, pendulous breasts, and a slightly hunched posture. Ovoid eyes above a furrowed brow, drooping cheeks, a beak-shaped nose, and perky ears define the highly stylized visage. The stocky pounder body has a rounded head for pulverizing a variety of foodstuffs, and registers of repeating linear motifs are incised into the shoulder and discoid midsection. Red-brown pigment covers the surfaces and provides for a handsome presentation. Size: 3.375" W x 18" H (8.6 cm x 45.7 cm); 18.5" H (47 cm) on included custom stand.
