Description
This lot consists of a watercolor illustration on paper, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869 -1954). "HM 53" is written in graphite at lower right. Image depicts a vibrant pattern of organic shape. A simple yet sophisticated piece. Executed in the modernist style for which Matisse was so well known. Unframed dimensions approximately 11.5" x 8.25".
Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
