1789 Rhode Island Resolutions Recognize Thanksgiving
October 1789-Dated Federal Period, Imprint of Assembly Acts Signed, "Henry Ward" as Secretary, Resolutions of the General Assembly of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations, including a Resolution to recognize Thanksgiving, Printed by John Carter, Very Good.
Sent to the Town Clerk of East Greenwich, RI, this is the official printed record of the official Resolutions and Acts passed by the Rhode Island legislature relating to an array of topics. This Document consists of 17-1/2 original untrimmed pages some separating from the sewn spine, edge splits, only the top half of the back page is lacking, each measuring about 13.5" x 8.75" and bound by string, Very Good. An impressive diversity of topics, each an indication of what was important to Rhode Islanders in 1789. Page 2 consists of a listing of all Deputies and the towns they represented. Page 3 has a resolution to recognize a "Day of Thanksgiving on November 26th". On Page 5, John Carter was awarded 1,500 Pounds for his printing (of Colonial Currency fiscal Paper Money notes) for the State. It is interesting that Bills of Credit were discounted "7 to 1" relative to hard specie (coined money), indicating the public distaste for the inflation of paper money! Also included in later pages was a report on the building of a road and additional resolutions. Autograph is actual written signature, "Henry Ward" as Secretary on the final separated back page. Uniformly toned, with some small humidity tone and minor edge chipping from use. A fascinating read and interesting original source document.
