Description

Title: 1860 Friendship/Signature Tester Bed Quilt

Provenance/Additional Info: A signed and dated (1860) hand-stitched quilt for a tester bed. I believe the pattern to be Quilty Stars. The quilt measures 82” x 69” with cut-outs in the corners at one end. The center of each block has either a signature, a signature with a date or an inscription. Many are faded and/or illegible, but several clearly show the 1860 date. A couple even show what might be a geographic location, but I cannot make them out. Purchased at an auction in Western Massachusetts about 20 years ago, I do not know where it was made, or even to whom it was presented. My understanding is that signature quilts for tester beds are uncommon. Shown here on a queen-sized tester bed. For its age, the quilt is in fine to very fine condition: it is all hand-stitched, including the binding and there are no tears or holes. There are a few pulled threads and some scattered, minor staining, but for the most part, the colors have not faded. No unpleasant odors. Solid color underside (light tan).
