Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec culture, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A ferocious looking grayware pottery vessel in the form of a dog. It sits on a flat base, semicircular in shape, the dog is lying down, half curled. The wide vessel mouth is located on the dog's back and the interior cavity extends from the tail into the head. The dog lifts its head forward; its pointed ears perk up from both sides and its skillfully carved facial features include lashed ovoid eyes, lips pulled back, and teeth bared; he is alert and snarling. The Zapotec included clay effigies in burials, often in the form of vessels. Dogs were a popular funerary choice, because they were believed to guide and carry the deceased across water into the afterlife, a theme wonderfully demonstrated with this pup that seems poised to protect its owner! Size: 6.75" L x 7.25" W x 3.75" H (17.1 cm x 18.4 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Estate of Floyd Johnson, collected 1960s - 1990s
