AN ANTEBELLUM UNITED STATES SURGEON GENERAL APPOINTMENT OF DR. JOSEPH ROWE SMITH, FROM JEFFERSON DAVIS, SECRETARY OF WAR, SIGNED, TO BVT. BRIGADIER GENERAL PERSIFOR FRAZER SMITH, DEPARTMENT OF TEXAS, CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, JANUARY 9, 1855, engraving on paper with hand-inscribed black and red ink, the senatorial appointment executed by Jefferson Davis as Secretary of War, is sent to notify both Dr. Joseph Rowe Smith and Brevette Major General P.F. Smith; the service from December 15, 1854, requires response by letter to the Adjutant General's Office and Dr. Joseph Rowe Smith was expected to report for service to "the Commander of the Department of Texas, signed "Jefferson Davis," in the upper left a blind stamp. 9 7/8" x 15 1/2" Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Shutts, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Some stains, losses, foxing, holes, tears and uneven edges, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
