Julius Moessel
Born in Furth, Germany and moved to Chicago in 1929 and worked as a painter, muralist and architect. Between 1920-50’s Moessel became a very notable figure in the Chicago Art scene. He was well-known for decorative paintings of exotic birds and tropical animals, as well as surreal figural works. Three of his more whimsical works appeared on covers of The Saturday Evening Post. From 1938-1940, as part of the WPA and the Federal Art Project, Moessel created 18 murals for the Chicago Field Museum’s “Plants of the World Exhibit.” The murals are still on display today. His art was also exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1931-41), the Corcoran Gallery Biennial (1935, 1937), and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1939), and is in the permanent collections in both Germany and the United States.
