Description
**First Time At Auction**
Northern Europe, The Netherlands, Delft, ca. 18th century CE. A lovely group of five Delftware porcelain tiles, each with a different Biblical scene: Adam and Eve with the snake, Abraham offering to sacrifice Isaac, David battling Goliath, David with Goliath's severed head, and the crucifixion of Christ. The scenes are set in a roundel with a floral motif in the corners outside of the border rings, and three of the five tiles include the Bible chapter and verse. The black glaze, made from manganese, turns a deep plum hue when fired, adding a nice gradient to the bichrome glaze. Dutch tiles were manufactured primarily in the city of Delft and used in the interiors of private and public buildings. With religious imagery beautifully displayed, perhaps these decorated a pious household or a church. Size: 5" L x 5" W (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
