Rev War, 1779 Rare Printed Muster Roll for Patriot Col Hercules Mooney
Single page partially printed Muster roll document on laid paper, 12.5" x 8.5"., for the "Return of the Regiment of the Foot commanded by Colonel Hercules Mooney". Dated "Providence Aug 21, 1779". Accompanied by a privately printed book in soft wraps, "Hercules Mooney" written by Richard Mooney. 8.5" x 11". The Muster roll is ragged with extensive edgewear and stains, however most of the typescript and manuscript remains quite legible. The book is in very good condition with slightly grubby wraps.
A superb Muster Roll for this important patriot of the Revolutionary War. In 1775 Hercules Mooney was a delegate to the provincial congress at Exeter, New Hampshire and in 1776 was appointed lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army. He was a New Hampshire Military officer of Distinction. Fought in the French and Indian War as a Captain, was at the Battle of Fort William Henry. He served in Col. Pierse Long's regiment (Long's Regiment) and fought at the Battle of Fort Ann during the Saratoga campaign. During 1778 and 1779 Col. Mooney served on New Hampshire's Committee of Safety. In June 1779 he was given command of a regiment of New Hampshire Militia that was sent to Rhode Island to keep watch on the British Army at Newport.
The Muster roll contains the manuscript lists of "Colonels Company", "Majors Company", "Capt Worthen", "Capt Stone", "Capt Emerson", and "Capt Runels". Across the top of the Muster Roll are printed columns of "Officers Present for Duty", "Rank & File", "Waiting to Compleat", and "Alterations since the last return". Check boxes are in place representing a count of Officers present for Duty, along with their status of whether they are "Present for Duty", "Sick Present", "Sick Absent", "On Command", and "On Furlough".
The official function of muster rolls was that of enumeration of a particular military unit or a crew of a ship, recorded by officers for administrative purposes to distribute pay. Today they are used to offer substantial insight into the movement of troops, or an individual's achievements, and changes during their military career, capture of prisoners, duration of time which a soldier was held as a prisoner of war (POW), abandonment of post or absent without leave (AWOL), missing in action (MIA) - among other statuses.
