**First Time At Auction**
Western Europe, France, ca. late 14th to 15th century CE. A cast-brass cap fragment for the lower point of a sword scabbard known as a chape. The conical applique features openwork circular and bar-shaped punch-outs, a narrow tip, and a triangular projection on top. The concave verso illustrates how the chape attached to the bottom of a sheath and provided a glinting decorative touch. Fine patina has formed across the surfaces. Size: 2.1" L x 0.9" W (5.3 cm x 2.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition
This is a fragment (one half) of a larger composition. Encrustations and abrasions across obverse, peripheries, and verso, with bending and slight damage to back panel, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina and earthen deposits throughout.
