Extremely nice copy of a scarce book, complete with dust jacket. The first exhaustive biography of George Henry Thomas, the "Rock of Chickamauga," who was one of the most remarkable and least appreciated figures of the Civil War. Thomas is credited with building the Army of the Cumberland. Through a series of victories beginning at Mill Springs and culminating at Missionary Ridge, Thomas created the first army to use many of the tools of modern warfare--railroad transport, remote fire control, the field telegraph, camouflage, the folding pontoon, and map coordinates. When Grant and Sherman broke up this magnificent army, Thomas achieved with its remnants the war's most decisive victory--the Battle of Nashville, now recognized as one of the two most perfect battles in history. Written by Francis McKinney and pub. 1961 by Wayne State University Press. 530 pages. 6.5 x 9.5.
