Description
A Very rare ancient relic from West Africa, Central Nigeria, Nok culture, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A terracotta headvmade of a coarse, quartz-tempered clay. The features were hand-modeled, and the face is dominated by large, deeply incised eyes which are classic features of these sculptures. Little is known about the peoples who made these objects, though scholars believe they were likely ancestral shrine objects. This head measures 10 x 6.5 inches. provenance: A Private Pennsylvania collection.
