Description
1678 1ed War Propaganda Marchamont Nedham Reason for Reduction of France England
Marchamont Nedham was a 17th-century English pamphlet writer who was writing essays for both sides in the English Civil War. Much of his work was intended to be propaganda where he looked to expose political views and military decisions.
Nedham’s final pamphlet, published just before he died in 1678, was his encouraging England to declare war on France. According to Mulligan and Simms, Nedham’s “Chrstianissimus Christianandus”,
“suggested that a unified island enjoying sovereignty over its surrounding waters should look naturally toward greater dominion.”
Writers such as Nedham feared that the recent French advances against the Dutch in Flanders would bleed over into England (Claydon). Therefore, preemptively attacking would prevent English losses.
