Ancient Byzantine Sea Salvaged Glazed & Decorated Bowl Ca. 5th century A.D. Size 11 inches diameter x 3 5/8 inches high. Thick walled pottery bowl standing on a low ring base. Mottled pale and dark green glazed surface with a central incised, stylized fish, surrounded by four linear elements. Under side and rim with heavy encrusted marine deposits. Intact. A very interesting example. Provenance: Ex. Edythe Shulman Collection, Boston, MA., acquired 1950s-1960s, then by descent, 1989. Exhibited: Origins Gallery, Newbery St., Boston, between 1959-1970. Gallery records, gifted to Smithsonian Archives.
