Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Mount Hagen area, Mendi, ca. 1940s CE. A superb and sizable carved wood shield embellished with a gorgeous minimalistic motif featuring two lovely rows of white cowrie shells. Boasting rich hues of chocolate brown and red, the intriguing armor's decoration is symmetrical along a vertical axis and consists of a half-circle painted a vibrant hue of crimson against the brown ground on either side. The periphery of each half-circle is outlined by a deeply incised line filled with cowrie shells, which is flanked by a two pairs of dotted striations. A pair of drill holes tied with a vegetal fiber rope are featured at the midsection of the shield, allowing one to easily wear the armor over one shoulder to protect the archer's side or proudly display the piece on the wall of a warrior's home. Condition
Liberal remains of cowrie shells. Fissure on one side that continues about one-quarter way down body. Expected nicks/chips and abrasions to periphery and surface commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, very nice with excellent remaining pigments and light patina.
