15 items. Manuscript letters, military telegraphs, etc.

Includes a letter "To the Parents of Lieut. Pixley" regarding a commission found in the effects of a slain soldier and a copy of the promotion of Charles H. Pixley to 2nd Lieut in Co, B 1st Vermont Cavalry. Sadly, less than a month after being promoted, Pixley drowned at Broad Run, VA trying to cross a stream.

Archive of letters relating to Charles H. Pixley

  • Oct. 2nd, 58; Enosburgh Falls, Vt. Autograph letter signed by Pixley to a friend about news at home. Second letter written after Pixley's in a differnt hand.
  • 3 pp. autograph letter signed by Pixley after his enlistment describing his first posting (closed tear along old folds, last page with no writing used to do some accounting figures)
  • Autograph commission signed by Col. E. B. Sawyer promoting Charles Pixley to 2nd Lieut. Dated Feb 1st, 1863.
  • Autograph letter signed to the Parents of Lieut. Pixley dated July 8, 1863 froom M. A. Woodbury. Pixley's commission found in brother's effects (old folds)
  • Autograph letter signed to the P. M. General dated Aug. 13, 1863, regarding the inability to delivery a letter and its return (old folds)
  • Printed Post Office Department Dead Letter Office form dated Aug. 17, 1863. Filled out regarding a letter mailed by Pixley to his wife Hannah Pixley that could not be delivered.

  • Single sheet of blue paper written on both sides. Aug. 7th, 1861. Autograph letter signed to the Governor of Vermont offering to supply balls of any size needed for German muskets (old creases and folds)
  • Vermont Regiment Head-Quarters at Camp Griffin, Va. dated Dec. 12, 1861. Printed letterhead. 4 pp. Autograph letter signed listing officers and asking for a pair of boots (closed tears at old folds, small tape repair to tear, smudged)
  • Printed Volunteer Enlistment State of Illinois form filled out for a Harrison Mount dated August 21, 1862 (folded, soiled, possibly stepped on)
  • The Trumpet. June 1862. Handwritten anti-war tract possibly to be submitted for publication (folded, water smudged)
  • U. S. Military Telegraph from Bridgeport to Col MacKay. Dec. 15, 1861. Asking if employees should work on fortifications (upper inch ripped off affecting title, old folds)
  • U. S. Military Telegraph from Chattanooga to Col. A J. MacKay. August 30. Reporting on shipments made to the front (old folds)
  • U. S. Military Telegraph from Chattanooga to Col. MacKay. 1864. Reporting on shipment to the front (lower right corner missing, not affecting text, creasing to right edge, old folds)
  • U. S. Military Telegraph from Harrisburg? to Commodore Richardson. Apr. 15, 1864. Regarding transportation issue (trangular chip at bottom affecting text; old folds chipping along top)
  • United States Military Telegrph from 2nd Corps Hd Qrs, Jno G. Hazard to Col. J. C. Tidball. Informs he is to relieve Capt. Eaton. Tidball originated the tradition of playing taps at a military burial (old folds)
