Item Details

Description

A glittering and artistic lacquer box with amazing detail in the design. It was most likely made to hold letters. The lightweight wood box has been coated in a gold flecked lacquer on the outside and black lacquer on the inside and base. The box has metal hinges and metal keyholes that have been tooled in elaborate designs. The lid has very artistic gold and brown paintings of a flower arrangement on a stand, a basket, a bird flying, and a peony in bloom. The workmanship is very accurate and minute. MEASUREMENTS 10 ½Â” (26.7 cm) wide x 8 3/4Â” (22.2 cm) deep x 3Â” (7.6 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 12.1 oz (795 g) CONDITION There is wear on the lacquer. There is a chip on the lacquer on the front near the peony flower, another on the rounded lip edge, as well as on each of the corners. There are areas of the top that are stained, and a few small nicks. The sides also have a couple of small stains, a few scratches and small nicks, and one small chip. The lacquer inside is much shinier with less wear, although there are a few scratches and nicks in once compartment. The other compartment has very little wear. The base has wear from being moved. An antique box from Japan with great detail and artistry. Such a utilitarian object has been elevated to a piece of art.
