OLIVER'S AUCTION July Gallery Auction featuring The Dr. Willard Pate Collection 700+ Lots of Fine Art, Antiques & Southern Folk Treasures — Every Lot Opens at $5, No Reserves Bidding Opens: Wednesday, July 15 at 8:00 PM · Auction Closes: Sunday, July 26 — lots begin closing at 7:00 PM Gallery Preview: Friday, July 24 & Saturday, July 25 · 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Pickup: Monday, July 27 & Tuesday, July 28 · Nationwide shipping available on nearly every lot Oliver's Auction is proud to present our July Gallery Auction — one of the most remarkable catalogs we've ever assembled, with more than 700 lots spanning fine art, sterling silver, estate jewelry, Southern folk pottery, and Americana, anchored by the lifetime collection of one of the Upstate's most beloved educators. The Dr. Willard Pate Collection For more than sixty years, Dr. Frances Willard Pate taught Southern Literature at Furman University, where generations of students passed through her legendary courses on William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, and Alice Walker. Beyond the classroom she was an accomplished photographer, an avid traveler — and, in the words of those who knew her best, a fanatical lover of cats. Oliver's Auction is honored to present her collection, assembled over a lifetime of teaching, travel, and devotion to the animals she adored. The collection numbers over 300 lots and reflects a scholar's eye: original works by the celebrated British artist Louis Wain, a rare circa-1870 Minton majolica cat pitcher designed by Paul Comolera, an exceptional group of Hannah Barlow Doulton Lambeth sgraffito stoneware, Austrian cold-painted bronzes including Franz Bergman, Susan Herbert's original gouache after Van Gogh, Debby Faulkner-Stevens vellum miniatures, and crystal cats by Baccarat, Daum, Waterford, and Swarovski — alongside Royal Doulton, Beswick, Kutani, and folk art felines of every description. Fittingly for a Flannery O'Connor scholar, the collection even includes Douglas Powers' block print “Flannery O'Connor's Treelines #14.” Additional Headline Lots A 1573 Gasparo da Salò Violin. A rare 16th-century violin bearing the internal maker's mark of the pioneering Brescian master Gasparo da Salò, housed in its period case — a once-in-a-generation offering for collectors and musicians alike. Fine Jewelry & Watches. A Ladies Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date, a 1 CT diamond and platinum ring, a 14KT black opal and diamond ring, Art Deco filigree, Victorian coral and cameo brooches, and a 10KT diamond tennis bracelet — many with appraisals in hand. Sterling Silver. A 104-piece Gorham Buttercup sterling flatware service with matching repoussé tea set, a 113-piece Manchester “Southern Rose” collection, Whiting, Towle, and 19th-century Kentucky coin silver. Southern Folk Pottery & Folk Art The lane our bidders know us for, and this catalog delivers: Joe “Jug” Johnson churns from Laurens, SC, an Edgefield stoneware churn, works by Cleater, David, and Anita Meaders, Grace Nell Hewell, A.R. Cole, Neolia Cole, a Claude Miller face jug, Clint Alderman's hand-sculpted rooster and owl, and early Southern alkaline-glaze stoneware throughout. Folk art runs deep as well — a 19th-century carved tobacconist trade sign, William Veasey and Harry Strahl decoys, carved canes, whirligigs, J.E. Stevens mechanical banks, a massive Choctaw Linda Farve lidded basket, Catawba Indian pottery, and Georgetown Plantation gathering baskets. Fine Furniture & Art An 18th-century American Chippendale cherry chest, a dated 1857 Hungarian folk painted cupboard, Pennsylvania German paint-decorated blanket chests, country pie safes in original paint, a French Louis XV style ormolu-mounted bureau plat, a Chinese carved hardwood altar table, and hand-knotted Kashan and Bijar rugs. Fine art includes Enoch Wood Perry Jr., Charles Kermit Ewing, Leo Meiersdorff, Papa Horning folk paintings, and an 18th-century American School portrait. How to Bid Bid online through LiveAuctioneers or Proxibid beginning Wednesday, July 15 at 8:00 PM. Lots begin closing Sunday evening, July 26 at 7:00 PM. Come see it in person. I knew what I wanted and now it's mine
I had been wanting a large cast iron Dutch oven, so I bid on this one and won. What made me bid? This is a larger Dutch oven made by the same people who made the one I already have. I couldn't be happier. Some cast iron I buy is for collector value, some I buy for everyday use, and this Dutch oven joins the collection of pieces we use almost daily.

Great communication between the auction house and myself.
Few auction houses these days take customer service seriously. I’ve bought a few items on Live Auctioneers through many auction houses. The ones that have texted me and emailed about the progress of my winning bid have been a pleasure to work with. Others have been rude and demanding.
