Mortimer F. Elliott autographed typed letter signed, two pages on two separate sheets of Standard Oil Company letterhead, dated Oil City, Pennsylvania, June 9, 1896. Elliott writes to Samuel D. Irwin of Tionesta, Pennsylvania, concerning the surrender and cancellation of a land lease in Forest County involving the United Natural Gas Company and National Transit Company, both closely associated with Standard Oil's Pennsylvania operations.
Elliott explains that the lease, originally made by Thomas G. Hood and the executors of the estate of James Bonbright to the National Transit Company, had been forwarded for cancellation but that a subsequent demand had been made for an additional year's rent. He asks Irwin whether he received acknowledgment that the surrendered lease and cancellation had been accepted, noting, "I know that you acted in good faith in this matter." Elliott signs prominently at the conclusion, "M. F. Elliott."
Fine condition with original folds, light toning, and scattered spotting.
Mortimer F. Elliott (1840-1920) was an American attorney, politician, and longtime legal representative of the Standard Oil interests. A Democrat, he represented Pennsylvania at-large in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1883 to 1885 after earlier serving in Pennsylvania's Constitutional Convention of 1872. Elliott later entered the service of Standard Oil, establishing his headquarters at Oil City, Pennsylvania, while also working from the company's New York offices. He rose to become one of Standard Oil's principal attorneys and was identified as the company's chief counsel by the time of the landmark 1911 Supreme Court decision ordering the dissolution of the Standard Oil trust. His career placed him at the intersection of Pennsylvania's early petroleum industry, national politics, and one of the most consequential corporate and antitrust battles of the Gilded Age.
