Desmond Doss autographed 4 x 6-inch glossy color photograph depicting President Harry S. Truman presenting him with the Medal of Honor. Doss signed boldly across the lower portion, adding "C.M.H.," and wrote the date "Oct. 12, 1945" on the verso, the date Truman formally presented him with the Medal of Honor at the White House.
Accompanied by a remarkable two-page handwritten autographed letter (ALS), dated September 22, 1997, written on both sides of a single folded sheet and addressed to Philip Felton. Doss discusses his health and wartime disabilities, writing that he was "100% DAV from WWII" and explaining that he was completely deaf without his cochlear implant and that his eyesight was deteriorating. He also asks about obtaining a John F. Kennedy First Day Cover and recalls personally meeting Kennedy, writing that he had "met him and talked with him at the White House, several times," describing Kennedy as "a good and friendly President" and adding, "It made me sick to know how he was killed." Doss further mentions his book The Unlikeliest Hero, based on his World War II experiences. The letter closes "Sincerely" and is signed "Desmond T. Doss, C.M.H."
Fine condition overall.
Desmond T. Doss (1919-2006) was a United States Army combat medic and the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for valor. During the Battle of Okinawa, Doss repeatedly entered areas under intense enemy fire to rescue wounded soldiers and is credited with saving approximately 75 men at the Maeda Escarpment, later known as Hacksaw Ridge. His extraordinary wartime service became the subject of the Academy Award-winning 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge.
