Details:
James H. Wilson autographed 7.25 x 6.75" U.S. Army "Requisition for Forage" document dated August 1869 at Keokuk, Iowa. The partially printed document requests forage for two private horses in Wilson's service for 31 days, commencing August 1 and ending August 31, 1869. It records allowances for oats, hay, and straw and is boldly autographed by Wilson at the conclusion of the certification.
The document identifies Wilson as a Brevet Major General and Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army. Additional docketing appears on the reverse identifying the requisition for August 1869.
Very good condition with expected age toning, horizontal and vertical folds, scattered soiling, and several old tape repairs and reinforcements visible on the reverse.
James H. Wilson (1837–1925) was a Union Army general, cavalry commander, and military engineer who rose rapidly through the ranks during the Civil War. He served under Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman and became particularly noted for commanding large cavalry forces during the final campaigns of the war, including Wilson's Raid through Alabama and Georgia in 1865. After the war, Wilson remained in the Regular Army and was assigned to engineering work on the Upper Mississippi River, with headquarters at Keokuk, Iowa. He later returned to military service during the Spanish-American War and the Boxer Rebellion.
