J. Edgar Hoover (1895–1972) was an American law enforcement official who served as Director of the Bureau of Investigation and, following its reorganization, as the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He led the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972, serving under eight presidents and overseeing the Bureau's development into a major federal law enforcement agency. One of the most powerful and controversial figures in 20th-century American government, Hoover's nearly five-decade tenure encompassed Prohibition-era crime, World War II, the Cold War, and the civil rights era.
