Description
Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867-1959) Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright Booklet, 1911 Letterpress text and offset lithograph illustrations on wove paper, bound 6 x 4-1/2 inches (15.2 x 11.4 cm) (book, closed) Published by Ralph Fletcher Seymour Property from the Collection of Kathryn Smith PROVENANCE: Ex. Coll: Robert Sweeney. LITERATURE: Sweeney 100. In October 1909, Frank Lloyd Wright, accompanied by his mistress Mamah Borthwick, crossed the Atlantic and settled in Fiesole outside of Florence, Italy. During his stay, Wright and two draftsmen compiled an oversized portfolio containing 100 lithographs of his most celebrated projects, including the Frederic Robie House, the Avery Coonley House, the Larkin Building, United Temple, and more, as well as an introduction penned by Wright. Published bt German publisher Ernst Wasmuth Verlag, Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright, colloquially known as the Wasmuth Portfolio, stands as one of the important and influential architectural publications ever produced. Few copies of this booklet designed by Wright announcing the sale of the Wasmuth Portfolio remain. Its cover features a title executed in stylized letters and accented with Wright's signature red square. The interior includes seven pages, three with reproductions of drawings from the portfolio and four with a poetic sales pitch from Wright. He wrote: "These designs themselves are the fruit of twenty years' practice in the field - a practice devoted wholly to the ideal of an organic Architecture true to conditions as they exist here. They are not idle dreams. They are actual solutions of hand, matter-of-fact problems that are brought every day to the Architects, who by their work are determining the character of our national Architecture."
