This copy was owned by GEORGE H. CARTER (1874-1948), Public Printer of the United States and chief of the Government Printing Office. His ownership signature appears on the front pastedown. On the opposite page (cleanly disbound), is his signed statement of provenance which reads in full: 'Extract from 'WE' by Charles A. Lindbergh (pp. 287-89) (At reception by National Press Club, Washington, June 11,1927) 'Secretary of State Kellogg next presented Lindbergh with a memorial Volume consisting of a compilation of diplomatic exchanges between the State Department and the Foreign Offices of the world in connection with the flight.'Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh! he slowly and ponderously began, staring hard at the object of his eulogy. On May 20th and 21st, 1927, the world was electrified by the news of your non- stop flight from New York to Paris. ** 'You have been congratulated by Kings and Presidents. ** You do not now realize the thousands who have expressed their congratulations in letters and telegrams. I have had printed in this little volume only the official telegrams which passed through the Department of State and I take pleasure in presenting to you this volume in commemoration of your epochal achievement.' *** This book is an exact and only copy of the one printed and bound by the U.S. Government Printing Office for presentation to Lindbergh by the Secretary of State, Hon. Frank B. Kellogg, June 11, 1927, as recorded in the above extract from Mr. Lindbergh's book 'WE'. George H. Carter. Public Printer of the U.S. 1921-1934' The title page of the book has additionally been signed by Lindbergh: 'Sincerely Charles A. Lindbergh Jan. 1933' This volume has been extra-illustrated with an engraved invitation to Carter from the Lindbergh Reception Committee inviting him to attend 'Lindbergh Day' proceedings at the Washington Monument. During the ceremony, Coolidge praised Lindbergh as 'intelligent' and 'dependable' before awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross. A record-setting crowd gathered for the event, which marked a major national celebration of Lindbergh's achievement, with his speech broadcast nationwide. Also tipped-in is a ticket to the event; a 'Lindbergh Again Flies the Air Mail' Chicago-St. Louis flown cover canceled in St. Louis Feb. 20, 1928; a block of four 10 cent 'Lindbergh Air Mail' postage stamps (glued in); a Canal Zone Lindbergh commemorative cover, a June 11, 1927 invitation to the National Press Club invitation to a reception for Lindbergh; and one other piece. First few pages which include title page and most ephemera are cleanly disbound, binding in need of a bit of tightening and a few miniscule chips to the spine, else in fine condition. A terrific Lindbergh signed piece. Ex: Skinner, 1997.
