Entire letter (strengthened file fold) written from San Sebastian by George Marvington 'Pensioner 9th Regiment 9d per day', with red oval framed "S. SEBASTIAN", two line "ESPAGNE PAR / ST JEAN DE LUZ" and a London arrival c.d.s.Ê Addressed to "The Right Hon. The Paymaster General of His Majestys Forces, Whitehall, London" and delivered free of charge, contents comprise "Sir, This is to inform you that I am serving in the 3rd Regiment British Legion in Spain so I cannot attend to draw my pension until I return to England which I hope will be very soon".Ê The British Legion comprised 9600 mercenaries, sent to Spain with the approval of the British Government to help suppress the revolt led by Carlos, brother of the former King Ferdinand.
