
Description:
Entire letter (edge stains and central fold, a little splitting) written from Alladin in Turkey, the address panel headed "From Isaac Newton, Bombardier E Field Battery, 3rd Batn Rl Artillery" and countersigned by the Commanding Officer, franked at the soldiers concession rate by a single 1d red cancelled upon aarrival in London. Backstamped by blue "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" c.d.s. (June 25) and upon arrival in London. Newton writes to his brother, also a Bombardier in the 3rd Battalion Detachment at Woolwich, and writes "you must not expect a letter very often for they will not take them without an English stamp & it is a difficult job to get one....excuse my scrawl as I have to write it on the top of my chaco under a bush". An early letter from the Crimean War and a very scarce use of the 1d rate from the Crimea.
