Description
Sarawak 1862 Neat Blue Envelope to the Revd. F.C. Johnson in Somerset, franked by 1856-64 2a dull pink and 8a carmine, tied by the uncommon "POST OFFICE / SARAWAK" double ring cancellation in black, additionally each tied by "B172" cancellation struck in transit at Singapore. The cover routed via Marseille with red "1/2" rate marking on face, has another strike of the "POST OFFICE / SARAWAK" marking on reverse, dated as usual in manuscript "17 March 1862". Indistinct (as usual) Singapore P.O. backstamp. A last minute postscript appears inside the flap "I have heard of Stuart he was quite well". An early and exceptional Sarawak cover.
