Description:
Entire (repaired tear, file fold) addressed to "Mr W.B. Nicholson, Tankards Temperance Hotel, Lonsdale St, Melbourne" and endorsed "by Burdells Express", bearing imperforate green Burdell & Co.'s British & Australian Express stamp, with the recipients filing note "Eastwood 17 May 55". Burdell's Express served the goldfields of Victoria, operating between Geelong and Melbourne, and was the only express company to use adhesive labels, this therefore being the first local stamp issued in Australia. "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow states 'the label is a great rarity, only eight copies being recorded, including two on covers and two on fronts', the majority of these being cut into the design or with other faults. An exceptional goldfields express cover.
