Title: Great Britain - Essays 1830's Description:
The superb coloured and embossed cameo of Earl Grey produced by Charles Whiting, with his name "Whiting Patentee" embossed, inverted in the lower centre. This cameo was one of a series of eight submitted by Charles Whiting to the Treasury in 1839 to demonstrate his expertise in colour printing. Examples of these cameos and other essays by Whiting, one of the winner of the 1839 Treasury Competition, are illustrated by Samuel Graveson in the book "Penny Postage Centenary" and by James Grimwood Taylor in "The British Postal Reform of 1839 to 1840", while the Royal collection contains four examples of thee cameos. A very scarce and eye catching exhibition piece.
