VINTAGE BRITISH SILVER CIGARETTE CASE

Description:

This vintage British silver cigarette case features complete silver markings, including a lion stamp, a Birmingham Silver Appraisal Bureau anchor stamp, and a date stamp corresponding to 1898 (during the Victorian era, roughly equivalent to the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty in China). The craftsman's name stamp reads "A & J Z" (Arthur & John Zimmerman). The front is inlaid with a three-dimensional gilded crown and a badge with cursive initials; the exact meaning is yet to be determined, but it undoubtedly belonged to a member of the royal family. Measuring 12.8 x 8.3 cm and weighing 164.87 g, the case has a curved shape for easy carrying. The interior is gilded, and the entire case employs a rare planishing hammering technique, a time-consuming and labor-intensive process possibly influenced by Japanese metalworking. The case can hold two layers of 84mm long cigarettes or 74mm short cigarettes, or several cigars.
