The David Plant Collection, 1925 Sunbeam Model 3/4 Project (see text) Registration no. not registered Frame no. 17900 Engine no. 245/16243/S Gearbox no. BT8616 Already established as makers of high-quality bicycles, the Wolverhampton-based firm of John Marston Ltd introduced the first Sunbeam motorcycle, a 350cc sidevalve single, in 1912. The marque quickly established a reputation for sporting prowess, achieving second place in the 1914 Isle of Man Senior TT and winning the 1920 race. Overhead-valve engines were introduced in the mid 1920s but early successes were achieved with sidevalve machines, most notably the famous 77x105.5mm 492cc 'Longstroke' that secured a debut win at the 1921 French Grand Prix in the hands of Alec Bennett. In road-going form this remarkable engine remained in production right up until WW2. Manufactured under a variety of model names, the Longstroke had gained drum brakes by the mid-1920s. At time of cataloguing it had not been possible positively to identify this Sunbeam, though we are advised by The Marston Sunbeam Club and Register that it is either a 1925 Model 3 or 4 based on the frame number. The machine is offered as an incomplete restoration project and is sold strictly as viewed.
