Launched from Woolwich Dockyard in 1846, the Amphion was a revolutionary 'first' for the British Navy, featuring the pioneering screw-propeller technology of John Ericsson. This specific piece captures the ship in its original 36-gun configuration, prior to its heavy involvement in the Crimean War (1853-1856). As a member of the Baltic Fleet under the command of the distinguished Captain Astley Cooper Key, the Amphion was instrumental in the blockade of Russian ports and the bombardment of the Sveaborg fortress (1855).
