A cased 20-bore (.600) percussion sporting rifle by Joseph Egg & Son, London, No. 2888 With rebrowned twist octagonal leaf-sighted barrel with bright bore rifled with spiral grooves, the top flat at the breech engraved with 'Joseph Egg Inventor of the copper cap, No. 1 Piccadilly London', foliate scroll engraved breech with pierced platinum plug and lines, border engraved tang decorated with foliate scrolls, border engraved back action lock signed and decorated with foliate scrollwork, dolphin hammer en suite, figured half-stock with horn fore-end cap (loses) and chequered grip, steel trigger-guard and butt-plate with engraved decoration with the serial number on the trigger-guard tang, trigger-plate with engraved pineapple-shaped finial, vacant silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheon, with wood and brass ramrod: in a relined and refitted mahogany case with a few accessories including a unmarked power flask probably formally leather covered, brass bullet and steel ball mould, main spring clamp, and three nipple wrenches the interior of the lid with trade label, London proof marks, 77 cm. barrel Footnotes: Joseph Egg & Son is recorded at 1 Piccadilly, London between 1835 and 1841 The property of James Brander Dunbar 1875-1969, 6th Laird of Pitgaveny and by descent.
