Two sections from a calligraphic genealogical scroll (silsilename), copied by Shaykh Sayyid Mustafa Badr al-Din Ottoman Turkey, dated AH 1199/1784-85 Arabic and Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper, roundels outlined in red, black and green containing names and titles of historical figures in naskhi script in red and black, roundels linked by ruled red lines, in two parts, each section incomplete, framed 174 x 24.5 cm.; 177 x 24.5 cm.; frames 200 x 50 cm.(2) Footnotes: Provenance Property from a Princely Collection. Genealogical manuscripts (silsilename) in the form of a scroll or a book were popular in the Ottoman period. Although generally classed as genealogies they in fact do not function strictly as such. They usually begin with an account of the Prophet Muhammad, followed by a history of the world from Adam to the reigning Ottoman Sultan, in our example is Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. For a similar example see Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 8th October 2015, lot 116 (dated AH 1255/AD 1839-40), and Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 9th April 2008, lot 29 (a bound manuscript of sixteen leaves, dated AH 978/AD 1570 and AH 981/AD 1573; and Sotheby's, 9th October 2013, lot 56 (still in scroll form, mid-19th Century).
