A large zilig calligraphic pottery tile panel North Africa, 14th Century or later comprising sixteen tiles of square form, the red-grey body decorated with a green glaze cut away to create a relief design of inscriptions on a ground of scrolling vine motifs each tile approx. 10.5 cm. square, panel 83.6 x 20.9 cm. Footnotes: Inscriptions: Qur'an, chapter III (Al 'Imran), part of verse 191, followed by: 'God told the truth and was conveyed by His Noble Messenger'. Unlike in the Levant and Egypt, a tradition of underglaze painting never developed in medieval Morocco, and the ingenious solution of intaglio was used to create designs far finer than those obtainable on cut-tile mosaic. Similar calligraphic friezes can be seen in the Abou Inania Madrasa in Fez (completed around 1355), sharing the same lobed cartouche border.
