A Qajar lacquer penbox (qalamdan) by Muhammad Javad Persia, dated AH 1304/AD 1886-87 with rounded ends and sliding tray, decorated in polychrome and gilt with cartouches and roundels containing saints to the top and sides interspersed with floral sprays and perching birds, the base and inner tray with scrolling foliate interlace, to interior a seal impression with signature of Muhammad Javad in nasta'liq 22.8 cm. long Footnotes: Cited as a painter, illuminator and penbox maker, Muhammad Javad was responsible for some of the highest quality penboxes of the late nineteenth century.
