A diagrammatic representation of the sandal of the Prophet Muhammad (qadam al-nabi) North India, 18th-19th Century pen and ink, gouache and gold on paper, heading in naskhi, captions in nasta'liq in black ink, the image outlined in gold and against an illuminated floral ground, inner margins ruled in gold and colours, original outer margins trimmed 191 x 110 mm. Footnotes: The heading reads: 'The size of the blessed sandals of that [sic: the Prophet?] Holiness, God's blessing and peace be upon him'. The captions on the diagram are: 'Place of the toe' and 'Place of the middle [?] toe', 'The straps of the back of the foot of the Holiness', 'The straps' and a couplet in Persian: 'It [this] is the size of our master's sandals/It is worthy, if rubbed on our head and eyes'. A representation of this subject was intended to function as an amulet for the person carrying it.
