A carved gilt-wood coat of arms depicting Gandabherunda South India, probably Mysore, 18th Century depicted with open wings, the chest and tail carved with naturalistic feather details, both eagle heads of stylised form with bulging eyes, enlarged teeth and flaring crown, the reverse with suspension hook 46 cm. high Footnotes: The grotesque attributes of this lot recall the sculptures and murals found at the Hindu Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur, where the 16th and 17th Century Chola paintings on the sanctum walls include a similar depiction of Gandabherunda. The Kingdom of Mysore adopted Gandabherunda as their official emblem in the late 15th Century, suggesting this carving may have once adorned a stately building there.
