A Mamluk style pottery bowl by Eugène Collinot France, 19th Century of compressed globular form with a short neck, decorated in polychrome enamel with roundels filled with fleur-de-lys motifs, interconnected by bands of inscriptions and quadrupeds, marked 'E.C' and with crescent inscribed 'TOUJOURS' 26.8 cm. diam. Footnotes: Inscriptions: undeciphered. Eugène Victor Collinot (d. 1882) established a faience pottery in Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1862, manufacturing pieces often in historic revival or Middle and Far Eastern styles. Collinot was awarded a silver medal at the 1867 Exhibition in Paris. He was singled out in the British and French reports on the Exhibition, the French reporter commenting that 'for the reproduction of Oriental faience M. Collinot is second to none'. In 1893, along with his partner Adalbert de Baumont, he was responsible for compiling one of the earliest compendiums of Islamic decoration which, along with his pottery, went on to have a profound influence on the work of younger French ceramicists such as Theodore Deck and Emile Samson.
