A fakir fainting at the encampment of a prince, probably a scene from a romance Pahari, probably Kangra, circa 1840 gouache and gold on paper, floral inner border, red outer border 240 x 335 mm. Footnotes: Provenance Private UK collection. The subject is obscure: however, the painting seems to come from the same series as a painting sold in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 23rd October 2018, lot 152. That painting had been the subject of a private communication between its seller and Robert Skelton (then at the Victoria and Albert Museum), in which the latter suggested that it may depict a scene from a Punjabi folk tale about Gopinath, or alternatively from an Avadhi romance, or from the story of Laur Chanda and Mrigavati. Another painting, probably from the same series, with close correspondences in some of the figures, the green of the grass, and the floral border, then in the collection of Rolf and Ute Rettberg, see Sotheby's, Indian and Southeast Asian Art including Modern Indian Paintings, 24th March 2004, lot 131.
