Beverley Nichols described her as 'a sculptress of genius, completely wasted in India'. There was a sale of material from her studio in the 1990s, the proceeds of which endowed a scholarship in her name at Plymouth. Charles Gerrard was Director of the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay from 1936 to 1946, introducing a keen personal observation of 1930s modernist developments in British and European painting, sculpture, graphic design and architecture. He was assisted in this by exiles from the Nazi regime such as Walter Langhammer and Rudi van Leyden, who with Gerrard directed at the School, invigorated the Bombay Art Society and encouraged modernist and art deco European design amongst local architectural practices and in commercial printing. See Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art Online Sale, 18th-26th May 2023, lot 465, for a group of material relating to Charles Gerrard and Doris Gerrard. Some of the sitters appear in the book included in this lot, Drawings by Doris Gerrard, notably two striking women referred to as 'Amina' (who appears to be the same figure in at least two of the drawings in the present group) and 'Tara', and at least one of the turbanned young men, one entitled 'The Village Chokra'. The last work in the book is a watercolour, entitled 'The Birth of Sita', in similar style to the single example in this lot. A number of drawings and sculptures by Doris Gerrard were included in an exhibition in Bombay, of which seven sculptures and two drawings were illustrated. One of the drawings depicts a sitter called 'Amina', again apparently the same figure in some of the drawings. School of Art, Bombay, in aid of the War Gifts Fund (Ladies' Committee), paperback, colour and black and white illustrations).
