An Ottoman coral and garnet-set enamelled silver-gilt buckle element later mounted as a brooch Turkey, late 18th/ early 19th Century of lobed form, set with coral (corallium rubrum), garnet and paste, and decorated in turquoise and green enamel with two flowerheads surrounded by foliate motifs, hanging clasp, reverse with later inscription, 'AUG from DCB Easter 1936' 8.5 cm. long; 22.2 g. Footnotes: Safranbolu, or Saphrampolis, whose name indicates its prominent role in the saffron trade, is located in northern Anatolia and was renowned for the crafting of grooved coral, colloquially known as 'finger nails'. These prized gemstones were traded along the Black Sea coastline and fashioned into jewellery and belt buckles favoured by the Ottoman elite.
