Sir Michael O'Dwyer, India as I Knew It, 1885-1925 Constable & Co., London, 1925 pp. 453, two folding maps of India and the Punjab, green cloth, 223 x 150 mm.; and Ian Colvin, The Life of General Dyer, William Blackwood & Sons, Edinburgh, 1929, first edition, pp. 345, 4 maps, frontispiece photographic portrait, blue cloth 228 x 150 mm.(2) Footnotes: Sir Michael O'Dwyer (1864-1940) was Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab from 1913 to 1919, and it was during his tenure that the Amritsar (or Jallianwalla Bagh) Massacre of 13th April 1919 took place, in which 379 people were killed and more than twelve hundred wounded when British troops opened fire on a crowd. O'Dwyer defended the actions of the officer in charge at the scene, Colonel Reginald Dyer (1864-1927), and he subsequently imposed martial law on the Punjab. He was assassinated in 1940 (see lot 246). Colvin's partisan account also defends Dyer's actions: the dust-jacket of the second edition (previously sold in these rooms) had the subtitle The story of Amritsar and the betrayal of the British in India.
