Jack Taylor, 1966 Charity Shield Plaque Everton v Liverpool
Jack Taylor, 1966 Charity Shield Plaque Everton v Liverpool Plaque presented to Jack Taylor for refereeing the 1966 FA Charity Shield between Everton and Liverpool, played at Goodison Park on 13 August 1966 Raised circular silver plaque with 'FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHARITY SHIELD' around FA three lions shield, mounted on octagonal bakelite easel inscribed 'EVERTON V LIVERPOOL AT GOODISON PARK, LIVERPOOL 13th AUGUST 1966' plaque diameter 9cm, overall 13cm Footnotes: AN UNPRECEDENTED SHOW OF UNITY AT A MERSEYSIDE DERBY 60 YEARS AGO. Just two weeks after the 1966 World Cup Final, a twist of fate meant that the FA Charity Shield was a Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton at Goodison Park, Liverpool having won the Football League First Division and Everton the FA Cup. 'Described locally as the great 'Liver-ton' or 'Ever-pool' double, it was an immense source of Scouse pride during an era when rivalries were more cordial' (Liverpool FC website), and joint souvenirs were even issued. The match was refereed by Jack Taylor, and Liverpool ran out winners 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Roger Hunt. Apart from representing an important chapter in Merseyside derby history, the Charity Shield was also the first domestic match after the 1966 England World Cup victory over West Germany at Wemblev - and Roger Hunt of Liverpool along with Ray Wilson and Alan Ball of Everton had played significant parts in the tournament, the first scoring three goals. There was even more than the usual amount of excitement and emotion on show, and before the kick-off an unprecedented joint lap of honour took place, during which the teams paraded the Jules Rimet Trophy and the two domestic ones around the ground.
