Muhammad Ali post-career training gloves A pair of training gloves used by Ali Everlast model 43056, made post 1981, palm-side opening of each glove inscribed 'Ali' and each inscribed and dated 'For Wali '94'' inside at the wrist, all in the hand of Wali Muhammad each approx. 18cm long Footnotes: FROM THE COLLECTION OF ALI'S CORNERMAN and assistant trainer from 1971-1981, Wali Muhammad: a pair of Ali's training gloves. Born Walter Youngblood, Wali Muhammad boxed himself initially but after an injury that threatened his sight he gave it up in favour of working for other fighters. During the 50s and early 60s he was equipment man and personal aide to Sugar Ray Robinson, often regarded as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all time. He was part of the group that frequented Robinson's cafe such as Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald but also acted as an assistant minister to Malcolm X at his mosque in Harlem. As Robinson's career ended he moved to join Muhammad Ali's training camp and fondly remembers playing golf with his boxing idol the great Joe Louis who would come up to visit Ali from time to time. Over the years, he became a fixture in Ali's corner and was eyewitness to the decade of fights as Ali recovered from his Vietnam war lay-off to become heavyweight champion of the world once more. His reminiscences of the fights against Norton, Foreman and Frazier are compelling. Provenance: Wali Muhammad; by descent to his daughter Daria Muhammad; sold by her on 4 April 2012 to Craig R.
