Jack Taylor, 1971 European Cup Final Medal The medal awarded to Jack Taylor for refereeing the 1971 European Cup Final between Ajax and Panathinaikos at Wembley on 2 June 1971 18ct gold, the obverse with raised lettering 'COUPE DES CLUBS CHAMPIONS EUROPEENS' below raised football and green and red enamel flag emblem, the reverse inscribed 'VAINQUEUR 1971' and stamped 'PEKA' and '0.750', with ring suspension 14g, 2.8 x 2cm Together with the blue and white woven badge supplied to Taylor and worn in the above European Cup Final, embroidered with twin hemisphere motif and the words 'REFEREE' and 'F.I.F.A.', slight soiling overall 13.3 x 9.3cm Footnotes: A FIRST EUROPEAN TROPHY FOR CRUYFF AND THE GREAT AJAX TEAM OF THE EARLY 1970S. The design of the medal presented to Jack Taylor is curious, being similar to the winners' medals from earlier years, even to the point of being inscribed 'Vainqueur' on the reverse, but with the emblem green and red rather than blue and red. The players' medals from the Ajax years are apparently all held in the families' collections, thus preventing comparison, whilst no other referee's medal from European Cup finals of this era have been traced. The match between the Dutch Champions and Panathinaikos, the first Greek team to reach a final and coached by the legendary Puskas, was described by Marca newspaper as 'one of the 50 best games in history' and 'an exhibition of football' on the part of Ajax, for whom this was the first of three consecutive European Cup titles. The team would form the nucleus of the Netherlands side that finished runners up to West Germany in the 1974 World Cup. Provenance: see preceding lots.
