Brockedon'), each mounted on card, some captioned on the image, some spotting to margins, images typically approximately 260 x 370mm. Baxendale' on verso of frame, 780 x 640mm., undated (group) Footnotes: William Brockedon (1787-1854), having first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1812, started his career primarily as a portrait painter but, having visited Italy for the first time in 1821 he 'became better known as a topographical landscape artist with a particular interest in the scenery of the Alps, and from the late 1820s onwards his work circulated more by means of engraving and illustrated books than through public exhibitions' (ODNB). He stated that he had crossed the Alps nearly sixty times, by thirty different routes. He was also elected to the academies of Florence and Rome and, as convention required, presented a self-portrait to the Florentine academy [Uffizi Gallery].
